Digging out the past...

Well as you guys have said, I am quite 'eng' these days, can keep coming up with "great" posts. Heres another one. I have been digging through the very very old "Spider Webbed" archives from our yahoo groups. To date there are a total of 2435 posts since I joined the group.(Of cos I haven finish reading all 2435 of them la... not so eng till that extend...) Reading through all the posts, esp those of "ancient times" have really brought back memories and also allow me to see how the team has changed and also how some individual has changed.

I shall put my attention to a particular thread posted on August 24, 2004, Tuesday. My post today shall revolve around this thread.

Below is the thread titled "training" started by Hazel...

training

hello pple,

guess u might be surprised to see my msg here..coz i dunno the
member's individual emails, so juz had to post here..

anw, juz wanna say sorry to all my bases - zhaoming,
xingwei,gerald.. for juz now's stunts..i dunno wats wrong with
mi..totally not focussing and wat's more, as my stunts kept failing,
i got more n more demoralised..such that i was a total wreck!! I AM
SORRY... it reali feels bad on my part everytime i fall, coz i know
the amount of hurt i feel cannot be compared to u guys...having the
responsibility of catching us, making sure we are safe..and on yr
part, instead u get whacked or kicked by mi (esp ZM).. generally,
juz can decribe my feeling at this pt of time as totally
DEMORALISED..i know that i shldnt be feeling this way, but juz can't
help but feel..i know this sounds bad but i can honestly say tt at
times, i reali juz feel like giving up..mebbe its easier that
way..but yet, some part of mi doesnt want to..and wants to be
stronger than ever...

i guess this would explain the "drama" juz now during our
briefing..juz wanna say sorry to the whole team..feel that i have
let u all down, esp Jesse..but rest assured i will put in even more
effort the next training..but i dunno if i can make it..think wat im
lacking is the CONFIDENCE to fly..i know that too..juz tt its
difficult to suddenly change..perhaps i'll be a better base? haha..i
dunno too... that's all i have to say..

sobz,
hazel

Re: training

it's ok hazel, we r not blaming u or anything.... :) it's ok if u
fail at stunts, we'll try our very best to catch u lor... no need
apologise to us for whacking or kicking us lah, we r mostly mentally
prepared for it le.... hehe... our main task is to catch the flyer n
make sure she's safe mahz, even if we get injured or whacked in the
process... coz u flyers r risking your lives doing the stunts
mahz... anyway, it's a good thing u wrote this email, or else ppl
will tot tat i bully u juz now n make u cry... hehe....

Re: training

dont give up , Aces is one big family , and we are here to grow together , and
to help each other mature in stunt and stature ... both bases and flyers have
their equal share of danger , bases can get kicked in their brotherhood , flyers
may fall flat on the ground , but at the end of the day , when we perfect the
stunt , the sense of satisfaction is doubled and shared too =) ... ... i
remember that day when you made it in full liberty and was so happy towards the
end of that training , you were happy and i was happy for you too as your team
mate and one of your base that dae'

so dont give up or feel demoralised or paiseh , we are here to help each other
grow ; i am pretty sure sheer hard work will pay off both for the flyer and the
base'

Re: training

hey hazel (or almond),

don fret cuz ur stunts were a little less than perfect. sometimes, we juz have our off days. it is something unexplainable but maybe once or twice, we do lose touch with what we are already so used to. dont be demoralized. the whole team will always be supportive and encourage you to be better cuz we know that you are so much better than what you can do right now. so dont need to worry so much about it. everyone knows that this is cheerleading and there are risks involved so for the bases to be kicked, punched or slapped, it is something normal. i guess we wont call it an actual training if any one of those doesnt happen to at least one base or flyer. take them as training us for pain endurance?? hehe.. we will continue to cheer you on. "SAY WE - ARE - CHEERLEADERS.. SAY WE ARE CHEERLEADERS.!!" hehe.. so yupz, dont worry. hey! you are supposed to be smileyger.

Re: training

yah lor... u r supposed to b smileger leh, not cryger leh..... so u
can't cry leh.... (^_^) as kt said, there's no trg without any bases
kanna whacked, kicked or slapped lor... hehe... so juz treat it as
endurance trg for us bah, in case our GFs do tat to us in future,
oops.... hehe.... hope 2 c u cheerful again on thursday ok???

Re: training

Hazel ,

Dun cry ok.. Don't be upset just because you keep whacking bases and not performing well as a flyer... Everyone has its "off" day too...

When i first started trying new stunts, i wasn't confident of doing it...When i hit the bases due to inexperience, i will also feel bad... Remember my twist? I did ok at first.. However after screw-driving downwards and not doing it right, i start to have phobia.. I even teared while trying to do. But ACES pp will encourage me and try to help me overcome the fear, so i have a bit more confidence of doing twist.

Gal.. dun worry, we will always be there to guide you and encourage you... You can do it one... Remember you are HAZEL!! Don't ever be discouraged if you think you canit perform well for a particular stunt.. cos practise makes perfect!! Try not to think so much k? Thursday we train you?

Take care!!!

There you have it, the end of that thread. This is one of the first posts that I can find of, what we called now, of EMOtional value.

Personally after I read the thread, I realised something. In the past when someone gets emo, there seemed to be alot of care, concern and love shown to the person. You can tell judging from the replies to the post itself. Nowadays, there seemed to be more shooting when someone gets emo. The post back then are mostly full of encouragement, but now the posts are mostly full of only complains.

Not only does the team changes, individual change too. As you guys can notice from the thread posts, NaMor was also someone full of love and encouragement back then. I quote from NaMor again,

"we r mostly mentally prepared for it le.... hehe... our main task is to catch the flyer n make sure she's safe mahz, even if we get injured or whacked in the process"

"so juz treat it as endurance trg for us bah, in case our GFs do tat to us in future,
oops.... hehe.... hope 2 c u cheerful again on thursday ok???"

Nowadays our NaMor where got so full of love and encouragement? Got so noble still or not? get whacked and injured in process nvm? or treat it as endurance training? hahaha... You guys judge for yourself... I hope miss K dun whack him too much also... hahaha

The team change, the individual change also. Now the level of stunts also changes, the perception of difficulty and the progression oso changes.

The stunt that Hazel was talking about was in fact "just a elevator pop twist cradle". In those times back then, it is not "just a elevator pop twist cradle", it is definetly a very difficult and possibly base destroying stunt, probably you can compare it to doing a toss pike out or toss full twist in modern days context.

Things has really changed alot since the "policeman wear shorts era", where stunts are much "simpler", When we can train the whole 3 hours of training only on elevator, extention, and dismounts. Nowadays ask us to do elevator a few times we also complain here complain there. What happen to all the basics? Nowadays new members join first thing is toss to hands then single liberty liao, where got go whack the basics. All they need is pure power and brute strength, but what they lack is all the momentum and feeling for the stunt, safety awareness also tend to be less. I am really glad that I was born in the "ancient era", else I wont not have done all the elevator basics to get the correct stunt feeling and foundation that I have now, the 10s of thousands of elevator I must have done just to do a single liberty.

So which era do you prefer to be in? The "ancient era" where stunts are not as exciting, where you have to do elevator repeatedly for thousands of times, but where there is more love at the same time, where NaMor is still a nice nice guy? Or do you prefer to be in the "modern era", where stunts we do can sometimes be termed crazy, where there always seemed something new to do each day, where we don't need to do the boring elevators, but where there is less love and where NaMor is less tolerant?

Well my take is this. Culture changes are really part and parcel of everyday lives. Guess there is no better or worse cultrue, it just takes getting used to, and finding the balance. Everything has its equilibruim, everyone can take a certain amount of something, as long as no one goes to disturb that equilibruim, everything will be fine. Sometimes things might seemed bad, but everyone accepts it and gets used to it, however if you try to change things by asking ppl to make the bad things good, you might just be disturbing that equlibruim, and when you do that, it might backfire and it takes time again to reset that equilibruim. I think there is no right or wrong or no good or bad, its all about balance and equilibruim, so long as you want to belong in the equation.

Hope you guys enjoy the journey to the past.
